Salan, Raoul

Born in Rocquecourbe, Tarn, Raoul Salan was named a division commander during the 1944-45 campaign during World War II and later was made commander of French forces in chief in indochina (1952-53). He then was placed in command of the French forces of the 10th military region of Algeria (1956). After the events of May 1958, he rallied to General charles de gaulle, but as a supporter of a French Algeria. Salan subsequently broke with de Gaulle and took part in the generals' putsch of April 1961, then took over the leadership of the organization de l'armée secrète (oas). Arrested in 1962, he received a death sentence for contempt that was commuted to life imprisonment. He was amnestied in 1968 and was rehabilitated in 1982.
